Located just about 90 kilometers north west of San Jose, Costa Rica, you will be able to see the wonderful Arenal Volcano. It is in the province of Alajuela in the little town of La Fortuna. Arenal Volcano is known as the most active volcano in the country of Costa Rica. Scientists consider Arenal as the newest as well as the most active mountains in the country of Costa Rica.
Arenal has been named a volcano since the 19th century, even though in those years it was known as Costa Rica Volcano and Rio Frio. Some scientists say that the volcano is about 4000 years old. This region of Costa Rica was unexplored up to 1937, when some explorers walked up to the top that year.
The greatest eruption of the Arenal Volcano happened in 1968 following around 400 years of stillness. That eruption ruined the entire region of Arenal, and ended the lives of 87 people. It damaged about 232 sq. kms. and lasted for a number of days. The explosion was so powerful that it created three additional craters. Ever since this incredible eruption, the Arenal Volcano has been active and you can see minor explosions very often, mostly at night.
The Arenal Volcano has become a very well-known tourist location, most of the tourists enjoy seeing the nighttime eruptions and of course the very popular hot springs. The most well-visited hot spring near La Fortuna is Tabacon. Arenal is one of seven volcanoes that can be viewed in the country of Costa Rica.
